It’s the first Philippines derby in the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League and the San Miguel Beermen will be chasing their first win of the season while the AirAsia Philippine Patriots will look forward to asserting their dominance over their compatriots.
Both teams got right into it after tip-off and the point difference in the first quarter was kept to 6 at the most. San Miguel Beermens’s Doug Thompson led his team in scoring with 8 points and Anthony Johnson contributing 10 out of the AirAsia Philippine Patriots first quarter total of 17 points in the first quarter. The San Miguel Beermen come out of the first quarter with a slim 21-17 lead over the Patriots.
The game was kept tight in the second quarter and although the Patriots were able to cut the lead down by just 3 points midway through the quarter the Beermen bounced back and halftime saw the San Miguel Beermen leading 40-32.
Time is running out of the clock for the AirAsia Philippine Patriots at this point and they still have to overcome a 12 point deficit in the third quarter of the game. The San Miguel Beermen are shooting well however, connecting 46% of their field goal attempts and missing only 2 from the free throw line. The third quarter ends with the San Miguel Beermen still leading 60-50 over the AirAsia Philippine Patriots.
The final buzzer saw the San Miguel Beermen retaining their lead and winning the game at 78 to the AirAsia Philippine Patriots’ 70 points. San Miguel Beermen’s Dalron Lamar Johnson had a brilliant game and ended with a double double at 23 points and 11 rebounds. It was Anthony Gene Johnson of the AirAsia Philippine Patriots that was the highest scorer for this match-up however, with 25 points.

San Miguel Beermen will travel to the Thai Japanese Association Gym on the 29th of January for their next game which will be away to the Chang Thailand Slammers while the AirAsia Philippines Patriots will host the Indonesia Warriors on the 28th of January 2012 at Ynares Sports Arena.Â
