      Saigon HeatVS Bangkok Cobras

Both Saigon Heat and Bangkok Cobras have been eliminated from the playoffs race after Westports Malaysia Dragons grabbed a 97-93 overtime win last Sunday but both teams will want to finish the season strong and grab the sixth position in their first season in the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League. 

Throughout their maiden season both Heat and Cobras have proved that they can play at a very high level and their performance in the league so far is a very good indication for both clubs’ growths in the future. Both teams have earned wins against much bigger opponents under their belt during their season so far and this is something that they will take with them as they prepare for upcoming seasons. 

Heat’s big man and fan favorite Jonathan Jones recorded his 14th double-double with 31 points and 12 rebound in Sunday’s 73-67 loss to the JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers. The Heat fans have fallen in love with Jones’ skills and effort this season. “Jay-Jay (Jones’nickname) has been great for the team. He’s a great leader and a great player. I hope he will come back and play for the Heat again next season.” said a Heat fan.

Cobras and Heat hold a similar record of 6 wins and 12 losses and both teams have three games left this season in which two of those games the Heat and Cobras will battle each other. In their first meeting on February 19thGentry Lewis finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 steals to help the Cobras grab a 76-61 win at Tan Binh Stadium. 

During the Cobras last outing against the San Miguel Beermen, they were within one point after Jai Reyes converted both of his free throws with 8:49 left in the fourth quarter before the Beermen responded with a 10-2 run and pulled away with a 91-77 win at Ynares Sports Arena. 

Gentry Lewis had one of his best gamethis season in the loss with 20 points and 17 rebounds. Cobras’ guard Marvin Cruz added 16 points and 6 assists for the Cobras who are now on a three-game losing streak. 

Jai Reyes and Marvin Cruz have been one of the quickest and most electrifying back-court tandem this season.  Reyes is averaging 15.5 points per game and Cruz is not far behind with 14.9 points per game.
